Lacey North Star Hoops (LNH) – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What age groups or grade levels do you serve?

We currently field teams beginning with 5th grade (11U) athletes and plan to expand into additional grade levels as the program continues to grow.

2. What is Lacey North Star Hoops all about?

LNH is a local, developmental basketball program rooted in Lacey, WA.
Our mission is to teach players resilience, direction, and motivation through basketball — emphasizing growth, teamwork, and life lessons over win-at-all-cost competition.

3. What leagues and tournaments do you play in?

Our teams play in the Youth Basketball Development League (YBDL), averaging 3–4 games per month, and we aim to enter one competitive tournament each month as scheduling allows.
Games are mostly local, with limited travel for select tournaments.

4. Do you hold tryouts?

We currently do player evaluations rather than traditional tryouts.
This ensures each athlete is placed at the right level for maximum growth, playing time, and confidence.

5. What are the player eligibility requirements?

For the 2025 season, 11U (5th Grade) athletes must be born on or after September 1, 2013 and currently enrolled in 5th grade.

6. How do I register my player?

Registration will be completed online through our secure Parent Portal (coming soon).
Families will enter player details, parent/guardian contacts, and complete AAU membership before the first practice.

7. What is AAU and why do players need a membership?

AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) is the national governing body for youth sports competition and provides insurance coverage and eligibility for all players and coaches.
An active AAU membership is required prior to participating in practices or games.

8. How much does it cost to play?

Season fees vary depending on league schedules, tournaments, and team size.
Our goal is to keep basketball affordable, transparent, and high-quality, covering costs with only a mild coaching stipend — not for profit.

9. What’s included in the player fees?

  • Full uniform (jersey + shorts)

  • Two practices per week

  • League & tournament entry fees (approx. one per month)

  • Skill development sessions

  • Hard Work, Effort, and Growth Mindset Training

10. Do you offer financial assistance or payment plans?

We’re actively working on a financial assistance and payment plan option.
While not yet available, our current structure is designed to minimize costs and maximize opportunity for every family.

11. Who are the coaches and program leaders?

  • Head Coach Kurt – Experienced in AAU, youth, and high school basketball. Known for player development and positive leadership.

  • Program Directors: Alex & Monica Demitras – Oversee operations, communications, and youth development initiatives.

12. How are coaches compensated?

Our coaches are valued as mentors and educators first.
They receive a modest stipend and shared incentives, recognizing their time, expertise, and the relationships they build with players and families.

13. How does Lacey North Star Hoops differ from other programs?

  • Player Development First: Guided by the “North Star” principle — growth through effort and integrity.

  • Community-Centered: Deep roots in Lacey / JBLM / South Sound, serving local families.

  • Transparent Operations: Clear fees, fair coaching compensation, and all funds reinvested into program growth and facilities.
